Somatic psychotherapy

Somatic psychotherapy is mental-health treatment provided by a licensed clinician. A therapist may combine talk therapy with awareness of sensation, breath, posture, movement, or nervous-system responses. Depending on their license and training, they may diagnose and treat mental-health conditions and work with clinical concerns such as trauma, anxiety, or depression.

If you need diagnosis, treatment planning, crisis care, or support for symptoms that interfere with daily functioning, a licensed mental-health professional is the appropriate place to begin.

Somatic bodywork

Somatic bodywork is a wellness-oriented practice that uses touch, movement, positioning, breath awareness, and present-moment noticing. The purpose may be rest, body awareness, reconnection, or a more collaborative experience of bodywork. It is not psychotherapy and does not diagnose or treat mental-health conditions.

At Aho Healing Arts in Dallas, somatic bodywork begins with a conversation about comfort, goals, touch preferences, and boundaries. The pace is adjusted through verbal feedback and the body’s cues, and every element remains optional.

How to choose

The right choice depends on what you need. Some people work only with a therapist or physician. Others choose complementary bodywork alongside licensed care. Ask any provider about their credentials, scope, consent practices, and what they do when a need falls outside their role.

  • Choose psychotherapy for mental-health diagnosis and treatment.
  • Choose licensed medical care for symptoms, injuries, or treatment decisions.
  • Consider somatic bodywork for complementary wellness, rest, and body awareness.
  • Use emergency or crisis resources when safety is at risk.
